Les Ponts de Mai

"Les ponts de mai" literally means the bridges of May. When a holiday falls on a Thursday, people take the Friday off, too, to "bridge" a long weekend. This week we have a holiday on Thursday, the "pont" on Friday and another holiday on Monday, for a total of a five-day weekend. I am off to Valencia, Spain, with my friend, Julie. Home to oranges and Lladro, we will be staying at a beachside hotel just north of the city. We plan to do some sightseeing, of course, but the main purpose is to be on the beach, in the sun. Sadly, the forecast calls for rain! I am hoping that it will be wrong, since the forecast for France is sunny and hot.

I'll write about the trip next week, but in the meantime, there is an important subject I have yet to discuss - pastries! Of course, they are delicious, but they are also quite beautiful. So, I am going to start taking some pics of them and I'll post them here. To start it off, here is a photo of a "mille feuille." It means a thousand leaves because of the layers of puff pastry. It has pastry cream inside and either has a glaze or powdered sugar topping. In the States they are usually called Napoleons. Whatever you want to call them, they are de-lish!

A bientot!

When I lived in Grenoble, my rugby friends and I would go drinking at a bar called la chiminee. Frequently, we werent going home until 4 or 5 in the morning, and would wait until this particular patisserie would open so we could get pain chocolate! This was in the 70's, and I can imagine what this old French baker thought of a bunch of hippies waiting outside his door before sunrise!Great for the muchies!
